19 Jun Why Arvada Sports Camp Really Matters
Since our launch in 2015, one of our favorite summer events has been a free sports camp for kids, which we originally called “Sports of All Sorts”. In 2017, we re-evaluated this camp and began to look for a way to make it more valuable and accessible to families in our community.
Through our connections serving with Arvada High School, we learned that a large number of AHS students have never played an organized team sport before they reach high school. Many families can’t afford the fees associated with club and travel teams, so freshmen were showing up to the field or court with very little training on the fundamentals of the sports they wanted to play. We asked ourselves, “What would it look like for us to step in and provide some more specific skills-and-drills-based training for kids before they get to high school?”
From that question, a new camp was born—Arvada Sports Camp! This 4-evening camp teaches the basics of tennis, volleyball, baseball/softball, basketball and other sports, with direct instruction from some of AHS’s head coaches and current players. We invited students from each of Arvada High School’s “feeder” elementary schools to join us, and over 100 students attended in 2017. This year, about 300 kids pre-registered for Arvada Sports Camp, and we expect to see even more show up!
Restoration Community Church has joined us in sponsoring the event for 2018. Join us in praying that the families who participate in Arvada Sports Camp will make a genuine connection with Storyline or Restoration. We want to use the platform of teaching sports basics to make a lasting impression on kids and parents in our community!
