Storyline Core Values: Relational Evangelism

How are you?

Some form of this simple question is heard nearly every minute of every day somewhere in the world. But do we really want to know?

How are you?

Three simple words that can have a profound impact if we choose to say them with conviction, if we say them and mean them.

How are you?

It’s a simple question that opens the door to a listening ear. It gives a person the opportunity to lay down burdens and rest in the company of a friend.

relational_evangelismAt Storyline, we believe that one person can make the greatest impact by digging deep into the messiness of another person’s life and loving them through it. That’s what we mean by relational evangelism—looking past the struggles and rough edges to see the person God created each of us to be.

This is the strategy for growth that Jesus modeled. As He went about His day-to-day routine, He built relationships with people in order to share His message of salvation. I like to think that as Jesus walked and talked with people He would look them in the eye. He’d listen to them and meet them where they are.

Jesus often didn’t push an agenda, but He genuinely cared for the needs of His friends. Then when the moment was right, He went deeper. He turned the conversation to sin and righteousness, death and life. He shared the Living Water and the Bread of Life. He proclaimed the Good News that He had come to save. That’s relational evangelism.

As a Christian, it is easy to get into our “Holy Huddles” and forget that there is a world full of people who desperately need some good news. They need someone to reach into their mess and love them where they are—whether or not they ever believe. It’s important for us to remember that we’re messy, too, but Christ has reached down into our mess and shown us a love that is beyond what we have to offer.

Will you be that kind of friend?
