11 Jun 5 Reasons Why You Should Be Baptized This Sunday
- Because you have believed the Gospel.
The Gospel is the good news that Jesus Christ conquered the grave and is building a kingdom one person at a time. By grace we are saved.
If you have received the grace of Jesus but have never proclaimed it, you should! Baptism is a powerful way to broadcast the message of forgiveness.
- Because you want to be a witness.
In the court system, we call witnesses to the stand. These individuals are put on the hot seat and told to “testify” with complete honesty.
In baptism, as a person is lowered into the water and raised up, he or she is a living, happy-to-be-breathing sermon—declaring a truth to those who need to hear. The best preachers this Sunday will be the ones dripping with water and beaming with joy.
- Because Jesus requires that you not be ashamed of Him.
If you are embarrassed to be seen with Christ, He will be embarrassed to identify with you in judgment. That’s a hard truth, but it’s exactly what He declares in Luke 9:26. Don’t be an undercover Christian; they don’t exist in the New Testament.
- Because courage stimulates courage.
Think about that word “en-courage” for a moment. To encourage is to deposit bravery into another person’s heart. You can fuel the fire of faith in others by your obedience to Christ’s commands. When I watch people step forward boldly to be baptized, it fills my tank with fresh zeal for Christ.
- Because rites of passage are powerful in our memory.
There’s a reason why God wants us to stop our busy lives and to be buried in water for a moment. The ceremony has a cementing effect on our faith. It’s a moment we will recall later when the cost of discipleship feels pricey. Just like a struggling husband remembers the day he said, “Till death do we part,” the follower of Jesus will have moments when the memory of water baptism will be motivating.
