28 Jan Planting the Right Seeds
This week, our family enjoyed a brief devotional time before the kids sprinted out the door to school. The reading was entitled “Planting the Right Seeds,” and the first paragraph read:
When you plant flower seeds in your garden, do you expect to grow a pumpkin patch? Or when you plant a field of corn, do you expect to harvest green beans? Of course not! You know that what you harvest depends on the seeds you’ve planted. It works the same way in our lives. We harvest what we plant…
Dinner Table Devotions by Nancy Guthrie
This little devotional caused me to reflect on our church plant, and the importance of getting the right people in places of leadership. Great church plants start with great seeds.
On Sunday, January 25, 2015, Storyline Fellowship planted a phenomenal seed. The families and individuals that have attended our Launch Team gatherings were now extended the opportunity to officially join the church as charter members. Since these folks come from all walks of life, and from various church backgrounds, it was essential for us to agree on the DNA going forward.
At Storyline, new members are asked to make six huge commitments.
The 6 “I Will’s” for Spectacular Storyline Membership
- I will faithfully attend our weekend services.
We’re not saying that you’re off the team for an absence, but we are saying that the weekly gatherings must be a major priority in our lives. God speaks to His people when they gather in His Name.
- I will take an active role in my Home Group.
In these small group gatherings, members enjoy fellowship, engage in discussion about Sunday’s message, and pray for one another. These groups create the space for deeper relationships. A pilot run of Home Groups begins in mid-March and will run through May.
- I will search for ways to use my spiritual gifts.
We are all members of one body. When every part of the body does its job, this is called “health.” Each person has a unique ability, a gift to share with others.
- I will give.
Jesus said, “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Luke 12:34, NIV). Storyline members are accountable to God for giving their tithe and offerings, to generously support the advance of the Gospel.
- I will protect the unity of my church by practicing healthy, humble confrontation.
We don’t talk behind each others’ backs. In Matthew 18: 15-20, Jesus gives us a simple three-step procedure for settling conflict. It begins with mustering the courage to go and talk to the person face-to-face.
- I will intentionally build 3-5 relationships per year with unbelievers.
We refuse to become a holy huddle, disengaging from the culture and sliding into irrelevance. We must make it a point to invest in people outside the church, to enrich their lives and to demonstrate the love of Jesus.
Now that the “seeds” have been planted, I’m excited to see what God does in this next phase of growth. Pray with us as we prepare to officially launch Storyline Fellowship on Sunday, February 8th!
